Welcome to the Compost Revolution!

Promoting your Compost Revolution program to your residents through your council channels is vital to your success.

This field guide is designed to save you time and effort making your Compost Revolution a success.

We've worked with over 50 councils and have learnt a lot about what works. Find below for your use, pre-prepared copy, images and suggestions for your

  1. communications plan

  2. council website

  3. e-news, newsletter & mayors column

  4. socials posts

  5. rates notice & letterbox drops

  6. media release

  7. graphics provided by Compost Revolution: web banner, flyer, poster and more

Communication Plan

The below is a great starting point of how to get your residents into your Compost Revolution program using common council channels. If you have other channels or you want to go above and beyond then go for it. The key thing is to always have a prominent clear call to action such as "go to compostrevolution.com.au and get composting today", in as many channels as often as practical.

Key Messages

  1. Council subsidises compost bins and worm farms for residents

  2. Go to compostrevolution.com.au to order yours today

  3. Composting is easy to do, great for the environment and great for you and your garden. Our quick online tutorials show you everything you need to know.

  4. Join 85,000 other households in the Compost Revolution today!

Accessory Messages

  1. Council is offering a shorter-term opportunity (e.g. a hands-on workshop, webinar or competition)

  2. Can't make it? don't worry, you can take the online tutorials and order your subsidised composting gear anytime online at compostrevolution.com.au.

Note: In some instances, you might be promoting a specific workshop, competition or other short-term opportunities. Even in these cases don't forget your key messages and primary call to action e.g. "go to compostrevolution.com.au and get composting today". While participating in a workshop or competition etc is great, these are really intermediary/optional calls to action, that feed into your main KPI of residents setting up compost bins, which is recorded via their ordering online. Don't waste a coms opportunity. Give your residents the chance to meet your KPIs even if the shorter-term opportunity doesn't fit their needs.

Why compost?

Nurture your soil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut your waste in half by composting your scraps at home.

The average Australian garbage bin is approximately 35% food waste. Along with garden waste, this adds up to 50%. When organic waste ends up in landfill it breaks down to create methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Which system is best for me?

The Compost Revolution makes it easy to choose the right system for you. There are many different types of composting systems. The perfect system for you depends on the space you have, the type and volume of waste you produce and how much time and money you want to invest. Visit the Compost Revolution to find out more about each system and use the guides, the chatbot and customer support to find out which system is best for you.

Need help setting up or troubleshooting your system?

If you have any issues with your composting system, the Compost Revolution has lots of handy tools, tips and tricks to help you on your way. Visit their Help Centre or contact our Support Squad.

Guidelines if using your own custom content on your council website

Makes sure the call to action is at the top of your page and the most prominent. E.g. "Did you know Council gives you FREE tutorials and subsidised composting equipment delivered to your door? Learn and order online today! compostrevolution.com.au/mountexamplecouncilville.

Any further information like why to compost or how to compost is available on our website anyway. Some councils still like to include such content, but it should definitely be after and less prominent than the call to action and link.

E-news, Newsletters and Mayors Columns

These are very reliable and effective channels. Getting space can be tricky with the council running so many programs. However, Compost Revolution is a popular tangible offer to residents, can be promoted with very few words and is an ongoing program so it's easy to book space in your council channels well in advance. You should expect to promote Compost Revolution in one of these channels every month or two, with higher frequency and longer word count feature articles through Spring.

Did you know about half of what the average Australian household throws out is compostable? Using home composting systems significantly reduces the amount we send to landfill. It also reduces our impact on climate change because food waste releases harmful greenhouse gases as it breaks down in landfill.

Composting or worm farming can make a big difference and is easy to do with our online how-to guides, council subsidised compost bins, worm farms and free delivery.

Composting and worm farming are also great for your garden, providing you with free organic fertiliser and building healthy soil.

Examplesville Council launches Compost Revolution

to cut household waste in half

From [insert date], Examplesville Council will be offering its residents free online training and discounted composting kits to recycle their food scraps at home instead of sending them to landfill. All residents are eligible to receive XX% off the recommended retail price and free delivery of compost bins, worm farms, and bokashi bins while funding lasts.

“Almost half of the average Australian household rubbish bin consists of compostable food waste,” said [enter council officer name]. “This represents a significant cost to council and a lost opportunity to recover valuable organic nutrients that can be used to green our gardens and pot plants.”

Australia sends 4.5 tonnes of food waste to landfill each year. Once in landfill, rotting food releases methane - 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide - and is currently responsible for upwards of 3% of Australia’s national greenhouse gas footprint. This rivals the country’s entire civil aviation industry.

The Examplesville Council hopes to engage XXX households in the first year, with the goal of bringing XX% of its residents on board within the first X years. This is expected to save ratepayers over $150,000 over the next X years in landfill and associated waste collection costs.

“Composting, worm farming, and bokashi fermentation are positively exploding as more and more people discover how easy it is to make a big difference for the environment while creating their own soil and fertiliser at home,” said David Gravina, 'Composter-in-Chief' and founder of Compost Revolution. “Composting is something all of us can do to turn a problem into a valuable resource while doing our bit for the planet.”

Winner of the 2017 Green Globe Award for Resource Recovery and Gold Winner of the 2020 Good Design Awards for their attractive compact worm farm 'The Farm', the Compost Revolution currently partners with 38 councils across 4 states, collectively diverting over 26,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill and saving nearly 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. It has introduced composting to over 82,000 Australian households to date, diverting over 100 tonnes of food waste from landfill each week.
